6 Month Wait for NHS Eye Treatment Case History

The troubles of the NHS are highlighted by the recent experience of a friend of mine. He had a lump on his eyelid and went to see his doctor. The doctor explained that it was a growth that needed to be cut out and he would be referred.

Several weeks later, my friend hadn’t heard anything and so he contacted the doctor who told him to get in touch with the NHS appointment booking team. After finally, finding the person he needed to speak with, he was told that there was a minimum wait of six months for an appointment.

My friend is a business professional, travelling across Europe. The lump was both unsightly and uncomfortable and needed to be sorted. He also realised delays in treatment could prove problematic in his work.

Fortunately he had private health insurance and so arranged an appointment with a specialist in Cardiff. He arrived and was examined, but was a little taken aback when asked: “Would you like the operation done now?”
He was put under local anaesthetic and the operation was done there and then. He left the clinic with a bandaged eye, but no growth.

This just highlights the problems in the NHS. This was a simple and straight forward procedure and yet the NHS needed 6 months just for an appointment. My friend recovered and was back to normal within 7-10 days. If he had waiting for the NHS, he may have been on the road to recovery in 7-10 months’ time!

Unfortunately, due to the strain on the NHS, the treatment for some non-life threatening health problems are being delayed. This is not something that will change in the short-term if ever, and such treatement is increasingly being taken up by the private sector.
